NEWS(2.2.08)

I recently returned from back to back trips to Ringling College of Art and Design with the Illustration Academy, and to Savannah College of Art and Design as a guest lecturer. It was great to see my good friends in Florida. The kind folks at Savannah treated me much better than warranted. I truly had a great time! Thanks to Julie Lieberman for making it happen, and to all my new friends in Georgia.

It looks like this was the season for portraits. It had been a while since I had painted someone of any renowned.

The new projects were commissions and the clients are listed below.

Bojangles for Virginia Living Magazine.
Tori Amos for a RAINN calendar.
Herbie Hancock for the Grammys.
Bruce Springsteen for Entertainment Weekly.

I've also recently completed an illustration for Pacifico Beer, commissioned by Creature Seattle. I'll post this one when I can.

Wow... Right before I was about to do a portrait of Herbie! Dang. Well, you did an amazing job. I'm sure Herbie himself would love it.

Sterling these are great! I love the Herbie Hancock piece! I also like how the Bojangles one resembles Edward Thony's style. You'll never seize to amaze me!

I love all these pieces, but the Hancock and Springsteen deserve instant classic status. They have a lot more emphasis on colour than most of your work. There's a subtle beauty in the approach and technique. Thanks for showing these Sterling. It's a pleasure to see your work.

hey Sterling. its great to see how the tori amos illustration went after the demo. the transparency of the hand/s playing guitar in the springsteen piece is having a great effect on the eye. i'm also loving the movement in the bojangles piece. can't wait to see more.

Sterling, I want to thank you for all the amazing advice you gave while you were here at Ringling. It was so great getting a chance to meet you, and I know everyone appreciates the time you took to speak with us. I've already started working on the issues we discussed, so thank you again. The portraits are beautiful, as always keep up the great work.

Did you show Tori the Michael Jackson portrait? heh. The new one doesn't look like MJ, looks good. Dig the Bojangles.

Teddy- thanks, it turns out that Herbie won the Grammy for album of the year!

Jared- thanks- Thony? a true compliment. George is definitely inspiring you guys!

Oliver- thank you.

Eli- thanks for the constructive (color) criticism. That was something that felt right for those two images.

Guy- thank you. The Tori portrait needed a lot of time after the demonstration.

Joe- Thank you!

Tedward- I'm sorry that the weather kept us from meeting up in New York. Your (3!) pieces looked amazing!

Naomi- Thank you- I hope that you are feeling better!

Arrolynn- It was my pleasure. I hope that some of the advice helped!

Burt- No, I haven't had the chance to share the "michael Jackson" portrait with Tori. Maybe in good time.
