i had my first week of classes at vcu on monday and tuesday.
i finished an illustration for rolling stone's album review section for john mayer's new album release. unfortunately, i wasn't allowed to interject much of a concept, although i was excited about the initial thumbnails. i did have trouble with mayer's likeness at first. after a bit of good art directing, and necessity, i painted directly over the old face and found confidence in being able to paint without first drawing, once again. could be a new direction for me? i've been using digital washes in place of oil washes, as of late. in an attempt to keep a human quality to my work, i try to limit what i do digitally to what i could do traditionally, with only a bit more time.
title: john mayer
client: rolling stone
art director: joe newton
size: 20" x 26"
medium: acrylics and digital washes

i really love it sterling---love the brushstrokes and variation
lisa, alian and megan,
thank you all for responding. i'm trying to let the paintings drive more these days, as i ride passenger. when i draw, it seems like the other way around.
